The University of the Witwatersrand

The University of the Witwatersrand (commonly known as Wits University) is an urban, comprehensive university which has a distinctive capacity to contribute to the reconstruction and development of South Africa through research and the production of skilled, critical and adaptable graduates. With more than 100,000 graduates in its noteworthy 92-year history, Wits has made and will continue to make its mark nationally and internationally.

The University has vast campuses spread over more than 400 hectares situated in the northern areas of central Johannesburg. The location of Wits in Johannesburg, a metropolitan city that aspires to acquire world-class status as the economic hub of the African continent, has provided a strategic advantage to the positioning of the University as a world-class research driven institution. The unique vision of the University is interlinked with the prospects of Johannesburg as a world-class city. Wits University is an English medium institution which offers approximately 3,000 courses to 30 000 students of whom approximately 16% are accommodated in the 18 residences owned by the University. The University is structured into five Faculties which comprise of 35 Schools.

It is one of only two universities in Africa ranked in two separate international rankings as a leading institution in the world and is the only university in the country that features in the top 1% in the world in seven defined fields of research according to the 2007 ISI international rankings. Wits is also the recipient of the highest levels of external financial support of all universities in the country, from donors and partners all over the world – testimony to the high esteem in which they are held internationally.
